3D molecule models

Interactive ball-and-stick and space-filling models of common molecules, from water and methane to glucose, caffeine and ATP. Each page explains the molecule's shape, bond angles, polarity, composition and uses.

Quick answer: tap any molecule to open its rotatable 3D model. To look up a different molecule, use the 3D molecular model viewer.

Frequently asked questions

What is a molecular model?

A physical or digital 3D representation of a molecule showing its atoms and bonds. Ball-and-stick models show bonds and angles clearly. Space-filling models show the true relative size and overall shape.

What do the colours in a molecular model mean?

Most kits and viewers use CPK colours: carbon grey or black, hydrogen white, oxygen red, nitrogen blue, chlorine green, sulfur yellow and phosphorus orange.

Where do the 3D coordinates come from?

Each model uses the computed 3D conformer published by PubChem (NIH), so bond lengths and angles are realistic.

Can I view a molecule that is not listed?

Yes. Open the 3D molecular model viewer and type any name, SMILES or PubChem CID, or draw one in Build a Molecule.
