Alkene reactions map template
Free template. Download it, or open it in MolDraw to change it first.
Alkene reaction map: 2-methylbut-2-ene in the centre with Markovnikov and anti-Markovnikov hydration, HBr with and without peroxides, Br₂, Br₂/H₂O, mCPBA, OsO₄, hydrogenation and ozonolysis products, reagents on every arrow.
What the template shows
- One trisubstituted alkene, ten standard transformations: reagents in colour above each product
- 2-Methylbut-2-ene (trisubstituted alkene)
- H₂O, H₂SO₄ (cat.) or Hg(OAc)₂, H₂O; NaBH₄
- Alcohol, Markovnikov
- BH₃·THF; then H₂O₂, NaOH
- Alcohol, anti-Markovnikov (syn add.)
- Alkyl halide, Markovnikov
- HBr, ROOR (radical)
- Alkyl halide, anti-Markovnikov
- Alkane (syn addition of H₂)
- Ozonolysis: ketone + aldehyde
- Vicinal dibromide (anti addition)
- Bromohydrin (OH on the more substituted C)
- Epoxide (syn, stereospecific)
- OsO₄ (cat.), NMO
- Syn-1,2-diol
- Electrophilic additions (H₃O⁺, HBr) go through the more stable carbocation: H adds to the less substituted carbon, the nucleophile to the more substituted one (Markovnikov).
- Hydroboration and radical HBr (with peroxides) put the OH or Br on the less substituted carbon (anti-Markovnikov); hydroboration is a syn addition.
- Br₂ adds anti through a bromonium ion; in water, H₂O opens the bromonium ion at the more substituted carbon, giving the bromohydrin shown.
- mCPBA epoxidation, OsO₄ dihydroxylation and catalytic hydrogenation are all syn additions and keep the alkene geometry (stereospecific).
- Ozonolysis with a reductive work-up (Me₂S or Zn) cuts the C=C: each alkene carbon becomes a C=O, here acetone and acetaldehyde.
- New stereocentres formed from an achiral alkene come out racemic; they are drawn here without stereochemistry.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Alkene reactions map template free?
Yes. The Alkene reactions map template is one of the free MolDraw templates: open it in the editor or download it from this page as SVG or PNG and use it in your slides, worksheets and notes.
Can I edit the Alkene reactions map template?
Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.
Is the chemistry checked?
Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.
What is a reaction map?
A one-page diagram linking functional groups by the reactions that convert one into another, with the reagents on each arrow. It is one of the fastest ways to revise synthesis.
