IR spectra: ketone, alcohol and carboxylic acid template
Free template. Download it, or open it in MolDraw to change it first.
IR sketches of propanone (C=O 1715 cm⁻¹), ethanol (broad O–H 3200–3550, C–O ~1050) and propanoic acid (very broad O–H 2500–3300, C=O ~1710), with the key bands labelled.
What the template shows
- Annotated sketches (wavenumber 4000 → 400 cm⁻¹, % transmittance): read the region above 1500 cm⁻¹ first
- Annotated IR sketches
- Ketone: propanone (acetone)
- strong, sharp C=O; no O–H
- C=O 1715 strong, sharp
- Alcohol: ethanol
- broad, strong O–H (H-bonded); C–O
- O–H 3200–3550 broad, strong
- Carboxylic acid: propanoic acid
- very broad O–H over the C–H; C=O
- O–H 2500–3300 very broad
- Ketone: one strong, sharp C=O near 1715 cm⁻¹ and nothing above 3100 cm⁻¹.
- Alcohol: hydrogen bonding makes the O–H band broad and strong (3200–3550 cm⁻¹); C–O appears at 1000–1260 cm⁻¹.
- Carboxylic acid: H-bonded dimers give a very broad O–H from about 2500 to 3300 cm⁻¹ that swallows the C–H peaks, plus C=O near 1710 cm⁻¹.
- Below 1500 cm⁻¹ is the fingerprint region: unique to each molecule, useful for matching but hard to assign.
- Band shapes and depths are sketches; positions are typical. Compare real spectra in the free MolDraw IR viewer (moldraw.com/tools/ir-viewer).
- Typical literature values; compare real spectra in SDBS · every part of this figure is editable

Frequently asked questions
Is the IR spectra: ketone, alcohol and carboxylic acid template free?
Yes. The IR spectra: ketone, alcohol and carboxylic acid template is one of the free MolDraw templates: open it in the editor or download it from this page as SVG or PNG and use it in your slides, worksheets and notes.
Can I edit the IR spectra: ketone, alcohol and carboxylic acid template?
Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.
Is the chemistry checked?
Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.
Are the spectra real data?
The spectra are schematic, drawn to the standard chemical shifts, splitting patterns and absorptions given in textbooks, so they are clear for teaching and exam practice.
