¹H NMR of ethanol template
Free template. Download it, or open it in MolDraw to change it first.
Ethanol CH₃CH₂OH: CH₃ triplet δ 1.2 (3H), CH₂ quartet δ 3.7 (2H), OH broad singlet δ ~2.6 (1H, variable), with integrals, n + 1 splitting and colour-coded assignments.
What the template shows
- Three proton environments: a triplet, a quartet and an exchange-broadened OH singlet
- ¹H NMR spectrum of ethanol
- ethanol, C₂H₆O · CDCl₃, 400 MHz, typical values
- δ / ppm (chemical shift; downfield ← → upfield)
- Multiplets are drawn wider than to scale so the lines can be counted; the stepped traces are the integrals (height ∝ number of H).
- why there
- Next to CH₂: 2 neighbours → triplet (1:2:1), J ≈ 7 Hz
- On C–O (deshielded); next to CH₃: 3 neighbours → quartet (1:3:3:1)
- Fast exchange: no coupling to CH₂; δ varies (about 1–5) with concentration
- Number of signals = number of proton environments (3); integrals give the ratio 3 : 2 : 1.
- n + 1 rule: a signal is split by n equivalent H on neighbouring carbons. CH₃ sees 2 H (triplet), CH₂ sees 3 H (quartet); both share J ≈ 7 Hz.
- O deshields the CH₂ (δ 3.7) compared with the CH₃ (δ 1.2).
- The OH proton exchanges quickly, so it is a broad singlet and does not split CH₂. Shaking with D₂O makes it disappear (OH → OD).

Frequently asked questions
Is the ¹H NMR of ethanol template free?
Yes. The ¹H NMR of ethanol template is one of the free MolDraw templates: open it in the editor or download it from this page as SVG or PNG and use it in your slides, worksheets and notes.
Can I edit the ¹H NMR of ethanol template?
Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.
Is the chemistry checked?
Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.
Are the spectra real data?
The spectra are schematic, drawn to the standard chemical shifts, splitting patterns and absorptions given in textbooks, so they are clear for teaching and exam practice.
