¹H NMR chemical-shift ranges template

Premium template. Preview and edit it free in MolDraw; downloading and exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro.
¹H chemical-shift chart on a 13 → 0 ppm axis: alkyl, allylic/benzylic, α-carbonyl, amine, H–C–O, H–C–halogen, alkene, aromatic, aldehyde, carboxylic acid and exchangeable OH/NH ranges, with examples.
What the template shows
- Where protons typically appear (δ / ppm from TMS): electronegative atoms, π systems and C=O move signals downfield
- Typical ¹H chemical shifts
- 4-Methoxybenzaldehyde (typical δ, CDCl₃): CHO 9.9 (s, 1H), Ar–H 7.8 and 7.0 (two d, 2H each), OCH₃ 3.9 (s, 3H). Three regions of the chart in one molecule.
- Carboxylic acid O–H
- RCO₂H, broad
- alcohol, ether, ester O–CH
- Benzylic, allylic
- Alcohol / amine O–H, N–H
- variable, broad (exchange)
- δ / ppm (¹H) ← downfield (deshielded) upfield (shielded) →
- Shielded (upfield, small δ, right) → deshielded (downfield, large δ, left).
- Electronegative neighbours (O, N, halogen) pull electron density away: H–C–O is δ 3.3–4.5.
- π-electron ring currents deshield aromatic (δ 6.5–8.5) and alkene (δ 4.5–6.5) H; aldehyde H (δ 9–10) feels C=O as well.
- OH and NH shifts depend on concentration, solvent and temperature (hydrogen bonding); a D₂O shake removes them.
- Ranges are typical; substituents add up roughly (e.g. two O on one carbon: δ ~5).
- Typical literature values; compare real spectra in SDBS · every part of this figure is editable

Frequently asked questions
Is the ¹H NMR chemical-shift ranges template free?
You can preview the ¹H NMR chemical-shift ranges template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.
Can I edit the ¹H NMR chemical-shift ranges template?
Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.
Is the chemistry checked?
Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.
Are the spectra real data?
The spectra are schematic, drawn to the standard chemical shifts, splitting patterns and absorptions given in textbooks, so they are clear for teaching and exam practice.
