Ozone adds to but-2-ene (molozonide), which splits to acetaldehyde and a carbonyl oxide; they recombine to the ozonide, and Me₂S reduces it to two acetaldehydes and DMSO.

Mechanism step by step

Ozone cleaves C=C to two carbonyl groups (Criegee mechanism)

  1. [3+2] Cycloaddition – The primary ozonide (molozonide)
  2. Retro-[3+2] – Carbonyl + carbonyl oxide (Criegee intermediate)
  3. Recombination – The secondary ozonide (1,2,4-trioxolane)
  4. Me₂S attacks – The O–O bond breaks
  5. First aldehyde – The alkoxide re-forms C=O
  6. Second aldehyde – DMSO leaves

Key points

  • Reductive work-up (Me₂S or Zn/AcOH) gives aldehydes and ketones.
  • Oxidative work-up (H₂O₂) turns aldehydes into carboxylic acids.
  • NaBH₄ work-up gives alcohols.
  • Locating C=C bonds: the fragments show where the double bond was.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Ozonolysis template free?

You can preview the Ozonolysis template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.

Can I edit the Ozonolysis template?

Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.

Is the chemistry checked?

Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.

Which name reactions are included?

Over seventy, covering the reactions most often asked in school-leaving exams (A-level, IB, CBSE, JEE and NEET) and first-year university courses, including condensations, rearrangements, oxidations, reductions and aromatic substitutions.
