Flowcharts for a standard aqueous work-up and for an acid–base extraction separating benzoic acid, aniline and naphthalene, with the structure in each layer and how each component is recovered.

What the template shows

  • Work-up flowcharts
  • An aqueous work-up, and an acid–base extraction separating an acid, an amine and a neutral compound
  • ⚠ Always check the supplier SDS; this is an example.
  • Aqueous work-up
  • Reaction mixture
  • Quench at 0 °C (sat. aq. NH₄Cl, water or dilute acid)
  • Add organic solvent + water; transfer to a separating funnel; shake and vent
  • Separate layers (aqueous layer: back-extract ×2, then to aqueous waste)
  • Organic layer: wash with water, then brine
  • Dry (MgSO₄ or Na₂SO₄), filter
  • Evaporate (rotary evaporator) → crude product → purify
  • Acid–base extraction: benzoic acid, aniline, naphthalene in Et₂O
  • Mixture in Et₂O: benzoic acid + aniline + naphthalene
  • extract with 1 M HCl (2 ×)
  • Aqueous layer (bottom)
  • anilinium chloride
  • Organic layer (top, Et₂O): benzoic acid + naphthalene
  • extract with 1 M NaOH or sat. NaHCO₃ (2 ×)
  • sodium benzoate
  • Organic layer (top)
  • naphthalene (neutral)
  • Basify with 2 M NaOH (pH > 10) → aniline separates; extract into Et₂O, dry, evaporate
  • Acidify with conc. HCl (pH < 2, ice bath) → benzoic acid precipitates; filter, wash, dry
  • Wash with brine, dry (MgSO₄), evaporate → naphthalene

Frequently asked questions

Is the Work-up & extraction flowcharts template free?

You can preview the Work-up & extraction flowcharts template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.

Can I edit the Work-up & extraction flowcharts template?

Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.

Is the chemistry checked?

Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.

Do the lab safety templates follow GHS?

Yes. Pictograms and hazard classes follow the UN Globally Harmonized System; check them against your institution’s own forms before use.
