Diethyl adipate cyclises with ethoxide to ethyl 2-oxocyclopentanecarboxylate; deprotonation of the product drives the equilibrium.

Mechanism step by step

An intramolecular Claisen condensation: a diester closes to a cyclic β-keto ester

  1. Enolate – Ethoxide removes an α-H
  2. Ring closure – Attack on the other ester: a five-membered ring
  3. Elimination – Ethoxide is expelled
  4. Deprotonation – The doubly activated C–H (pKa 11) drives the reaction
  5. Work-up – Acid gives the neutral β-keto ester

Key points

  • Best for five- and six-membered rings (1,6- and 1,7-diesters).
  • A full equivalent of base is needed: the product is deprotonated.
  • Hydrolysis and decarboxylation then give the cyclic ketone (cyclopentanone).
  • The alkoxide matches the ester to avoid transesterification.
