The N-oxide oxygen takes a β-hydrogen through a five-membered cyclic transition state; the C–N bond breaks at the same time, giving styrene and N,N-dimethylhydroxylamine.

Mechanism step by step

A tertiary amine oxide loses R₂NOH on heating to give an alkene (syn)

  1. Syn elimination (Ei) – O⁻ takes the β-H as the C=C forms and the C–N bond breaks: one concerted step

Key points

  • The amine oxide is made from the tertiary amine with H₂O₂ or mCPBA.
  • Syn elimination: the H and the N-oxide must be on the same side (compare anti E2).
  • Gives mainly the less substituted alkene (Hofmann-type), like the Hofmann elimination.
  • Runs at lower temperature than the Hofmann elimination and needs no strong base.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Cope elimination template free?

You can preview the Cope elimination template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.

Can I edit the Cope elimination template?

Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.

Is the chemistry checked?

Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.

Which name reactions are included?

Over seventy, covering the reactions most often asked in school-leaving exams (A-level, IB, CBSE, JEE and NEET) and first-year university courses, including condensations, rearrangements, oxidations, reductions and aromatic substitutions.
