Allyl vinyl ether rearranges to pent-4-enal; allyl phenyl ether gives a dienone that tautomerises to 2-allylphenol.

Mechanism step by step

A [3,3]-sigmatropic shift of allyl vinyl or allyl aryl ethers

  1. Aliphatic Claisen – Six electrons move in a chair-like ring
  2. Aromatic Claisen – The allyl group moves to the ortho carbon
  3. Deprotonation – Loss of the ring C–H restores aromaticity
  4. Protonation – 2-Allylphenol

Key points

  • Concerted and suprafacial, through a chair-like six-membered transition state.
  • C=O formation makes the aliphatic version strongly exothermic.
  • Both ortho positions blocked: a second (Cope) shift carries the allyl group to para.
  • Variants: Ireland–Claisen (silyl ketene acetals), Johnson–Claisen (orthoesters).

Frequently asked questions

Is the Claisen rearrangement template free?

You can preview the Claisen rearrangement template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.

Can I edit the Claisen rearrangement template?

Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.

Is the chemistry checked?

Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.

Which name reactions are included?

Over seventy, covering the reactions most often asked in school-leaving exams (A-level, IB, CBSE, JEE and NEET) and first-year university courses, including condensations, rearrangements, oxidations, reductions and aromatic substitutions.
