Ethene and Br₂ form a bromonium ion; bromide opens it from the back to give 1,2-dibromoethane.

Mechanism step by step

Bromonium ion formation, then anti attack by bromide

  1. Bromonium ion – The π bond attacks Br; Br closes the three-membered ring
  2. Ring opening – Br⁻ attacks from the back

Key points

  • Anti addition: the two Br atoms end up on opposite faces.
  • In water the bromonium is opened by H₂O: a bromohydrin.
  • The decolourisation of bromine water is a test for C=C.
  • Unsymmetrical bromonium ions open at the more substituted carbon.

Drawn with 24 atoms, 8 arrows, 8 shapes – every one editable in MolDraw.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Bromination of an alkene template free?

You can preview the Bromination of an alkene template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.

Can I edit the Bromination of an alkene template?

Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.

Is the chemistry checked?

Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.

What is a curly-arrow mechanism template?

A ready-made drawing of a reaction mechanism in which curved arrows show where electron pairs move in each step. You can open it in MolDraw, change the substrate and reuse it.
