Water of crystallisation template

Premium template. Preview and edit it free in MolDraw; downloading and exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro.
GCSE / high school to A-level / AP / IB: hydrated copper(II) sulfate heated in a crucible on a pipe-clay triangle, cooled in a desiccator and weighed until the mass is constant.
What the template shows
- Heat a hydrated salt to constant mass and find x in CuSO₄·xH₂O
- Crucible lid
- Keeps the solid from spitting out; lift it a little to let the water vapour escape
- Crucible + hydrated salt
- About 2 g of blue CuSO₄·5H₂O; it turns white as the water is driven off
- Pipe-clay triangle
- Bunsen burner
- Heat gently, then more strongly; overheating turns the salt black (CuO)
- Crucible tongs
- Cool the crucible here, so the anhydrous salt cannot take water back from the air
- Weigh empty, with the salt, then after each heating; repeat heat, cool, weigh until two masses agree. x = n(H₂O) ÷ n(CuSO₄)
