GCSE / high school (CBSE): polystyrene cup with a lid in a beaker, thermometer through the lid, a weighed solid (zinc powder into copper(II) sulfate solution, or a salt into water), measuring cylinder and stopwatch.

What the template shows

  • Measure the temperature change when a metal displaces another or a salt dissolves
  • Ideally to 0.1 °C. Read every 30 s for 3 min, add the solid, stir and keep reading; extrapolate the cooling line back to the time of mixing to get ΔT
  • Cuts heat loss
  • Polystyrene cup
  • e.g. 25 cm³ of 0.5 mol dm⁻³ CuSO₄(aq) from the measuring cylinder. q = m c ΔT (m = mass of solution, c = 4.18 J g⁻¹ K⁻¹); ΔH = −q ÷ moles of the reactant not in excess
  • Stops the cup tipping over
  • Weighed solid
  • Excess zinc powder: Zn + CuSO₄ → ZnSO₄ + Cu, the temperature rises. Dissolving NH₄NO₃ in water makes it fall
  • Reaction setup

Frequently asked questions

Is the Temperature change of a reaction template free?

You can preview the Temperature change of a reaction template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.

Can I edit the Temperature change of a reaction template?

Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.

Is the chemistry checked?

Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.

Can I edit the glassware?

Yes. Every piece of glassware is a MolDraw apparatus object: move, resize, recolour the liquid or swap a piece and the joints stay connected.
