Rate of reaction and temperature template

Rate of reaction and temperature template: GCSE / high school and A-level / AP / IB: solutions brought to temperature in boiling tubes in a thermostatic water bath, then mixed in a conical flask over a cross and timed until the cross disappears. (Marble chips with HCl at several temperatures, timed by gas volume or mass loss, is the other common version.)

What the template shows

  • Sodium thiosulfate and hydrochloric acid at different temperatures
  • Wait until the solution reaches the bath temperature
  • Dilute HCl
  • e.g. 10 cm³ of 1 mol dm⁻³, warmed in its own tube
  • Sodium thiosulfate
  • Water bath
  • Repeat at about 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 °C; a beaker of warm water also works
  • Mix over the cross
  • Na₂S₂O₃ + 2HCl → 2NaCl + S + SO₂ + H₂O; time until sulfur hides the cross. Rate ∝ 1/time. Ventilate: SO₂
  • Start when the acid goes in
  • Paper with a black cross
  • Reaction setup

Frequently asked questions

Is the Rate of reaction and temperature template free?

You can preview the Rate of reaction and temperature template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.

Can I edit the Rate of reaction and temperature template?

Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.

Is the chemistry checked?

Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.

Can I edit the glassware?

Yes. Every piece of glassware is a MolDraw apparatus object: move, resize, recolour the liquid or swap a piece and the joints stay connected.
