Pondweed in a clamped boiling tube of sodium hydrogencarbonate solution, a lamp at measured distances along a ruler, bubbles counted per minute. GCSE / high school; A-level / AP / IB Biology.
What the template shows
- Count the oxygen bubbles from pondweed with the lamp at different distances
- Oxygen bubbles
- Count bubbles from the cut stem for 1 min, 3 times at each distance
- Elodea or Cabomba, cut end up, held down with a paper clip; leave 5 min to adjust
- NaHCO₃ solution
- About 1%: supplies CO₂ so it is not limiting
- Distance d from the tube measured with a metre rule (e.g. 10 to 50 cm). Light intensity ∝ 1/d². An LED lamp keeps the temperature steady; work in a dim room
- Variant: collect the gas under an inverted funnel and measuring tube, or in a capillary (photosynthometer)
