Premium template. Preview and edit it free in MolDraw; downloading and exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro.
Separating funnel of iodine in cyclohexane over water, layers run off separately, each titrated with sodium thiosulfate using starch. IB / A-level extension and university physical.
What the template shows
- Iodine shared between two solvents: K = [I₂]org ÷ [I₂]aq
- Cyclohexane layer (top)
- Violet I₂. Older manuals use CCl₄, which is denser, so the layers swap
- Water layer (bottom)
- Pale yellow-brown
- Shake well, venting often; settle at constant temperature, then run off each layer separately
- Portion of a layer
- Pipette a measured volume of each layer (pipette filler)
- e.g. 0.1 M for the organic layer, 0.01 M for the water layer
- Starch near the end
- Blue-black to colourless. Add KI(aq) and shake hard with the organic portion so all I₂ is titrated
- Reaction setup
