GCSE / high school (CBSE class 9 to 10): potassium manganate(VII) heated in a clamped hard-glass boiling tube with a loose plug of mineral wool; the oxygen passes through a delivery tube into test tubes over water. 2KMnO₄ → K₂MnO₄ + MnO₂ + O₂.
What the template shows
- Heat KMnO₄ in a hard-glass tube and collect the oxygen over water
- Clamp near the mouth
- Hard-glass boiling tube; not too tight, hot glass expands
- Mineral wool plug
- Loose; stops fine solid being carried into the delivery tube
- Potassium manganate(VII)
- A few grams of purple-black crystals; they crackle and leave a dark residue
- Bunsen burner
- Heat gently at first, then strongly
- Test tubes of oxygen
- Filled with water, inverted on a beehive shelf. Discard the first tube (air); oxygen relights a glowing splint
- Suck-back
- Take the delivery tube out of the water before you stop heating, or water is drawn back into the hot tube
