What the template shows
- Tell alcohols, aldehydes, ketones and alkenes apart
- Orange to green: primary or secondary alcohol, or aldehyde. Tertiary alcohols and ketones stay orange
- Tollens' reagent
- Freshly made [Ag(NH₃)₂]⁺: aldehydes give a silver mirror. Wash out straight after with dilute HNO₃
- Hot water bath
- About 60 °C; no flames near the flammable organics
- Fehling's or Benedict's
- Blue solution gives a brick-red Cu₂O precipitate with aliphatic aldehydes, not ketones
- Bromine water
- Shake at room temperature: alkanes leave it orange (left), alkenes decolourise it (right)
- Reaction setup
Drawn with 15 shapes – every one editable in MolDraw.
