A-level / high school demonstration: hexane-1,6-diamine in water under decanedioyl chloride in hexane in a beaker; the nylon film at the interface is pulled out with tweezers and wound onto a glass rod.
What the template shows
- Make a polyamide at the boundary between two liquids that do not mix
- Glass rod
- Turn it to wind up the rope as fast as it forms
- Upper layer
- 5% decanedioyl (sebacoyl) chloride in hexane, poured gently down a glass rod. Corrosive: fume cupboard
- Lower layer
- 5% hexane-1,6-diamine in water with a little NaOH to neutralise the HCl formed. Gloves on
- Grip the film at the interface, lift out the nylon rope and wrap it round the rod; wash the nylon before touching it
- n ClOC(CH₂)₈COCl + n H₂N(CH₂)₆NH₂ → nylon-6,10 + 2n HCl. Hexanedioyl chloride gives nylon-6,6
