What the template shows
- Find the mass of oxygen that combines with magnesium, and the formula of the oxide
- Lift it a little now and then with tongs: lets oxygen in but keeps the white MgO smoke in
- Crucible + Mg ribbon
- Clean the ribbon with emery paper and coil it loosely
- Pipe-clay triangle
- Bunsen burner
- Heat strongly; do not look straight at the burning Mg
- Weigh crucible + lid, then with Mg, then after heating; reheat to constant mass. Mass gain = oxygen
- Crucible tongs
- Hot crucible: cool on a heatproof mat
- Reaction setup
