GCSE / high school and A-level: test tubes in racks showing hydroxide precipitates with NaOH, silver halides with acidified AgNO₃, barium sulfate with acidified BaCl₂, and the carbonate test with acid and limewater.

What the template shows

  • Identify cations and anions in solution by the precipitate or gas they give
  • Cations: add NaOH(aq)
  • Drop by drop. Left to right: Cu²⁺ blue, Fe²⁺ green, Fe³⁺ orange-brown precipitate. Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺ and Al³⁺ give white; only Al(OH)₃ dissolves in excess
  • Dropping bottles
  • A few drops of reagent into about 1 cm³ of test solution
  • Halides: HNO₃, then AgNO₃
  • First three tubes: AgCl white, AgBr cream, AgI yellow precipitate
  • Sulfate: HCl, then BaCl₂
  • White precipitate of BaSO₄
  • Carbonate: add dilute acid
  • It fizzes; bubbled through limewater (last tube) the CO₂ turns it milky. The acid added first in the halide and sulfate tests removes carbonate

Frequently asked questions

Is the Tests for ions template free?

You can preview the Tests for ions template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.

Can I edit the Tests for ions template?

Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.

Is the chemistry checked?

Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.

Can I edit the glassware?

Yes. Every piece of glassware is a MolDraw apparatus object: move, resize, recolour the liquid or swap a piece and the joints stay connected.
