Hydrogenation with an H₂ balloon template

What the template shows
- Reduce C=C (or remove a benzyl group) with H₂ gas over a palladium on carbon catalyst
- Vent needle
- For the purge only: flush the flask with N₂, then let H₂ from the balloon sweep out through it; then remove it
- Tight fit; a slight positive H₂ pressure
- Add the catalyst first under N₂, then the solvent (EtOH, MeOH or EtOAc); dry Pd/C can ignite solvent vapour
- Stir fast
- Gas, liquid and solid must mix; no heating
- Double balloon on a needle (about 1 atm); refill it when it shrinks. A Parr shaker is used for higher pressures. H₂ is flammable: fume hood, no flames
- Purge with N₂, filter through Celite, keep the filter cake wet with water (it can ignite when dry)
