Precipitate collected in a sintered glass crucible on a filter flask, then dried in an oven, cooled in a desiccator and weighed to constant mass. A-level / AP / IB and university analytical.

What the template shows

  • Weigh a precipitate of known formula to find how much of an ion was in the sample
  • Sintered glass crucible
  • Porosity 4; dried and weighed empty first. Collects the precipitate, e.g. red Ni(dmgH)₂ from Ni²⁺ and dimethylglyoxime, or AgCl
  • Rubber adapter
  • Seals the crucible on the flask
  • Filter flask
  • Gentle suction. Decant the clear liquid through first, then wash the solid on with cold water
  • Drying oven, 110–120 °C
  • Cool to room temperature over silica gel before each weighing: a warm crucible weighs light
  • Analytical balance
  • Dry, cool and weigh again until two masses agree within 0.3 mg (constant mass)
  • Reaction setup

Frequently asked questions

Is the Gravimetric analysis template free?

You can preview the Gravimetric analysis template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.

Can I edit the Gravimetric analysis template?

Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.

Is the chemistry checked?

Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.

Can I edit the glassware?

Yes. Every piece of glassware is a MolDraw apparatus object: move, resize, recolour the liquid or swap a piece and the joints stay connected.
