Fractional distillation template

Premium template. Preview and edit it free in MolDraw; downloading and exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro.
Flask in a heating mantle, Vigreux column, still head with the thermometer bulb at the side arm, water condenser, adapter and receiver. GCSE / A-level / university.
What the template shows
- Separate liquids with close boiling points on a fractionating column
- Water out
- Bulb level with the side arm; steady while each fraction distils
- Vigreux column
- Vapour condenses and reboils on the glass many times, so it gets richer in the more volatile liquid. Wrap in foil to insulate; a packed column (glass beads) also works
- e.g. cyclohexane and toluene; boiling chips; heat slowly
- Holds the receiver by the neck
- Change it when the temperature rises to collect separate fractions
- Reaction setup
Drawn with 20 shapes – every one editable in MolDraw.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Fractional distillation template free?
You can preview the Fractional distillation template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.
Can I edit the Fractional distillation template?
Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.
Is the chemistry checked?
Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.
Can I edit the glassware?
Yes. Every piece of glassware is a MolDraw apparatus object: move, resize, recolour the liquid or swap a piece and the joints stay connected.
