Clamped column of silica between sand layers under the eluent, flow adapter on top worked by hand bellows, and fractions collected in test tubes in a rack. University / A-level extension.
What the template shows
- Purify a mixture on silica gel, pushing the eluent through with gentle air pressure
- Flow adapter
- Its tap controls the pressure; open it to release
- Solvent mixture chosen by TLC (product Rf about 0.3); never let it fall below the sand
- Protects the top of the silica when solvent is added
- Silica gel
- Packed as a slurry over sand and a cotton plug; sample loaded in a narrow band at the top
- Collect in test tubes; check each by TLC and combine the pure ones
- Hand bellows
- Gentle pressure pushes eluent through at about 5 cm per minute
- Reaction setup
