What the template shows

  • Change a concentration or the temperature and watch the colour
  • Fe³⁺ + SCN⁻ ⇌ [FeSCN]²⁺
  • Pale yellow ions, blood-red complex. First tube: the control
  • Add Fe³⁺ or SCN⁻
  • Deeper red: the position moves right
  • Remove a reactant
  • e.g. Na₂HPO₄ (takes Fe³⁺) or AgNO₃ (takes SCN⁻): paler, moves left
  • Hot water, about 80 °C
  • [Co(H₂O)₆]²⁺ + 4Cl⁻ ⇌ [CoCl₄]²⁻ + 6H₂O; forward endothermic, so blue when hot
  • Ice bath
  • Pink when cold (violet at room temperature). CoCl₂ in conc. HCl: toxic and corrosive, wear gloves
  • Reaction setup

Frequently asked questions

Is the Shifting an equilibrium template free?

You can preview the Shifting an equilibrium template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.

Can I edit the Shifting an equilibrium template?

Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.

Is the chemistry checked?

Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.

Can I edit the glassware?

Yes. Every piece of glassware is a MolDraw apparatus object: move, resize, recolour the liquid or swap a piece and the joints stay connected.
