Copper anode wired to the positive terminal and the clean metal object as the cathode to the negative terminal of a DC supply, both dipping into copper(II) sulfate solution. GCSE / high school (CBSE class 10).

What the template shows

  • Coat a metal object with copper by electrolysis of copper(II) sulfate solution
  • Copper anode (+)
  • Cu → Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻: dissolves and loses mass
  • Object to plate: cathode (−)
  • e.g. an iron nail or a steel key, cleaned with emery paper and degreased. Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻ → Cu: a pink copper coat forms
  • Copper(II) sulfate solution
  • The Cu²⁺ concentration stays the same: copper goes in at the anode and out at the cathode
  • Low current (2 to 4 V) for an even, firm coat. Weigh both electrodes before and after: mass gained = mass lost

Frequently asked questions

Is the Electroplating with copper template free?

You can preview the Electroplating with copper template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.

Can I edit the Electroplating with copper template?

Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.

Is the chemistry checked?

Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.

Can I edit the glassware?

Yes. Every piece of glassware is a MolDraw apparatus object: move, resize, recolour the liquid or swap a piece and the joints stay connected.
