What the template shows
- Ions pass through a membrane; colloid particles stay inside
- Visking tubing
- Partially permeable: water and small ions pass, colloid particles do not
- Sol in the bag
- Lyophobic Fe(OH)₃ sol: FeCl₃ solution added drop by drop to boiling water; it holds HCl and FeCl₃ as impurities. Lyophilic sols (starch, gum, egg albumin) form just by warming in water
- Distilled water
- Change it every few hours (or use running water) until no more Cl⁻ comes out
- Silver nitrate
- Acidify a sample of the outer water with dilute HNO₃, then add a few drops of AgNO₃(aq)
- Test the outer water
- White AgCl precipitate: Cl⁻ ions have passed out. The water stays colourless: the sol particles stay in
