What the template shows
- Oxidise cobalt(II) in ammonia with H₂O₂, then heat with HCl to the purple chloropentaammine salt
- Fume hood
- Concentrated NH₃ and HCl; goggles and gloves. 30% H₂O₂ is corrosive
- Reaction flask
- NH₄Cl in conc. NH₃, then CoCl₂·6H₂O; add 30% H₂O₂ slowly (fizzes, Co²⁺ → Co³⁺, deep red); then conc. HCl
- About 20 min, stirred: purple [Co(NH₃)₅Cl]Cl₂ comes out
- Ice bath, then vacuum filtration
- Cool to room temperature, then in ice. Wash the crystals with a little ice-cold water, then ethanol; dry and weigh
