Steel bomb in a stirred bucket of weighed water inside an insulating jacket, with thermometer and firing leads to the ignition unit. University physical; A-level / IB theory.

What the template shows

  • Burn a weighed sample in oxygen at constant volume and measure the temperature rise
  • Weighed water
  • e.g. 2000 g in the bucket
  • Steel bomb
  • About 1 g pellet in a crucible, fuse wire touching it; charged to about 30 atm O₂ from a cylinder (no oil or grease near O₂ fittings)
  • Insulating jacket
  • Limits heat exchange; correct for the rest from the temperature curve
  • Reads to 0.001–0.01 K; record every 30 s before, during and after firing
  • Ignition unit
  • Turn the key to ARM, then press FIRE: a short pulse melts the fuse wire and fires the sample. Constant volume, so q gives ΔcU; ΔcH = ΔcU + Δn(gas)RT. Calibrate with benzoic acid (ΔcU = −26.43 kJ g⁻¹)
  • Reaction setup

Frequently asked questions

Is the Bomb calorimetry template free?

You can preview the Bomb calorimetry template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.

Can I edit the Bomb calorimetry template?

Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.

Is the chemistry checked?

Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.

Can I edit the glassware?

Yes. Every piece of glassware is a MolDraw apparatus object: move, resize, recolour the liquid or swap a piece and the joints stay connected.
