Ammonium chloride and calcium hydroxide heated in a clamped boiling tube, the gas dried through a tower of calcium oxide and collected in an inverted gas jar, tested with damp red litmus. GCSE / high school (CBSE class 10 to 12).
What the template shows
- Heat an ammonium salt with a base, dry the gas and collect it by upward delivery
- 2NH₄Cl + Ca(OH)₂ → CaCl₂ + 2NH₃ + 2H₂O. Clamp the tube with the mouth slightly lower so water formed cannot run back onto the hot glass
- Heat gently
- Inverted gas jar
- Ammonia is less dense than air: it rises and pushes the air out (upward delivery). Too soluble to collect over water
- Drying tower: CaO
- Quicklime. Not CaCl₂ or conc. H₂SO₄, which both react with ammonia
- Damp red litmus
- Turns blue at the mouth when the jar is full. HCl on a glass rod gives white smoke of NH₄Cl. Toxic, pungent gas: fume cupboard
