Acid–base extraction template

Premium template. Preview and edit it free in MolDraw; downloading and exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro.
Separating funnel in a ring clamp with the ether solution over an aqueous layer, and three labelled flasks for the base, acid and neutral fractions. A-level / AP / IB / university.
What the template shows
- Separate an acid, a base and a neutral compound from one solution by turning each into a salt in turn
- Mixture in ether (upper)
- e.g. benzoic acid, 4-chloroaniline and naphthalene in diethyl ether; very flammable, no flames
- Aqueous layer (lower)
- First dilute HCl, then NaOH(aq). Stopper, invert, vent often, shake, let the layers settle
- Running off
- Remove the stopper, run off the lower layer; repeat each wash once more
- Three fractions
- Pink, HCl extract: the amine as its salt; add NaOH(aq), filter the amine. Blue, NaOH extract: the acid as its salt; add HCl to pH 2, filter the acid. Yellow, ether layer: dry (MgSO₄), filter, evaporate to leave the neutral compound

Frequently asked questions
Is the Acid–base extraction template free?
You can preview the Acid–base extraction template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.
Can I edit the Acid–base extraction template?
Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.
Is the chemistry checked?
Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.
Can I edit the glassware?
Yes. Every piece of glassware is a MolDraw apparatus object: move, resize, recolour the liquid or swap a piece and the joints stay connected.
