Experimental section (SI) entry template
Free template. Download it, or open it in MolDraw to change it first.
A journal-style experimental entry for ethyl 4-aminobenzoate: general procedure, amounts in mass (mmol), yield, Rf, mp, IR, ¹H and ¹³C NMR and HRMS lines in ACS order, labelled as example data.
What the template shows
- The notebook page rewritten as a journal entry: general procedure, then one paragraph per compound
- Supporting Information, Experimental section
- General Procedure A (Fischer esterification).
- The carboxylic acid (1.0 equiv) was suspended in absolute ethanol (1.2 mL per mmol), and conc. H₂SO₄ (0.1 mL per mmol) was added dropwise. The mixture was heated at reflux for 2 h, cooled, poured onto ice-water and basified to pH ≈ 8 with 10% aq. Na₂CO₃. The precipitate was collected by filtration, washed with cold water, dried under vacuum and purified by flash column chromatography (hexane/EtOAc 3:1 → 2:1).
- Ethyl 4-aminobenzoate (2).
- Prepared by General Procedure A from 4-aminobenzoic acid (1) (1.37 g, 9.99 mmol), EtOH (12.0 mL) and H₂SO₄ (1.00 mL, 18.4 mmol). White solid (1.32 g, 80%). Rf = 0.45 (hexane/EtOAc 2:1). mp 89–90 °C (lit. 88–90 °C). IR (ATR) νmax 3424, 3345 (N–H), 1680 (C=O), 1598, 1275 cm⁻¹.
- ¹H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl₃) δ 7.86 (d, J = 8.7 Hz, 2H), 6.64 (d, J = 8.7 Hz, 2H), 4.31 (q, J = 7.1 Hz, 2H), 4.05 (br s, 2H), 1.36 (t, J = 7.1 Hz, 3H).
- ¹³C{¹H} NMR (101 MHz, CDCl₃) δ 166.8, 150.9, 131.6, 120.0, 113.8, 60.3, 14.4.
- HRMS (ESI) m/z: [M + H]⁺ calcd for C₉H₁₂NO₂⁺ 166.0863; found 166.0861.
- Spectroscopic values, yield, mp and Rf: Example data for layout only, not measured results: replace with your own.
- Key points (ACS style)
- Start with a General procedure when several compounds are made the same way; each entry then gives only the amounts and yield.
- Give amounts as mass (mmol) for every reagent and the isolated yield as mass (%), with the physical state.
- Then the data in a fixed order: Rf (with eluent), mp (with lit. value), IR, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, HRMS.
- ¹H NMR: δ (multiplicity, J in Hz, integration, assignment); state the field and solvent once.
- HRMS: ion, formula, calculated and found m/z to four decimal places.
- Follows the ACS Style Guide data order · amounts match the notebook page · every part is editable
Drawn with 12 atoms, 2 shapes – every one editable in MolDraw.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Experimental section (SI) entry template free?
Yes. The Experimental section (SI) entry template is one of the free MolDraw templates: open it in the editor or download it from this page as SVG or PNG and use it in your slides, worksheets and notes.
Can I edit the Experimental section (SI) entry template?
Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.
Is the chemistry checked?
Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.
What goes on the lab notebook experiment page?
The reaction scheme, a reagent table with amounts and equivalents, the procedure, observations, yield and characterisation, in the order most notebooks require.
