Butadiene and an enone template

Premium template. Preview and edit it free in MolDraw; downloading and exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro.
Buta-1,3-diene and but-3-en-2-one: the neutral form and the minor charge-separated form; for the enone the β-carbon carries δ+, as in conjugate addition.
What the template shows
- Charge-separated forms show where a conjugated π system is electron-poor
- Resonance contributors
- Buta-1,3-diene
- Neutral (major) ↔ charge-separated (minor)
- But-3-en-2-one
- The β-carbon becomes electrophilic
- Charge-separated forms are minor contributors, but they show the polarisation of the π system.
- Butadiene: the central C2–C3 bond (148 pm) is a little shorter than a normal C–C single bond, and the s-cis/s-trans rotation has a small barrier.
- Enone: the β-carbon is δ+, which is why nucleophiles add there (Michael and conjugate additions).
- Charges placed to match electronegativity (O⁻, C⁺) make a better minor form than the reverse.
- Contributors are not in equilibrium: the real species is one hybrid of them · every part of this figure is editable
Drawn with 18 atoms, 6 arrows, 3 shapes – every one editable in MolDraw.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Butadiene and an enone template free?
You can preview the Butadiene and an enone template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.
Can I edit the Butadiene and an enone template?
Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.
Is the chemistry checked?
Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.
How are resonance structures shown?
Each contributor is drawn separately, joined by double-headed resonance arrows, with curly arrows showing how the electrons move from one contributor to the next.
