Pentose phosphate pathway template

Premium template. Preview and edit it free in MolDraw; downloading and exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro.
Glucose 6-phosphate → 6-phosphoglucono-δ-lactone (G6PD, NADP⁺) → 6-phosphogluconate (lactonase) → ribulose 5-phosphate + CO₂ (6PGD, NADP⁺) → ribose 5-phosphate (isomerase).
What the template shows
- Oxidative phase: glucose 6-phosphate gives two NADPH, CO₂ and ribulose 5-phosphate
- glucose 6-phosphate
- 6-phosphoglucono-δ-lactone
- ribulose 5-phosphate
- ribose 5-phosphate
- Glucose 6-phosphate + 2 NADP⁺ + H₂O → ribulose 5-phosphate + 2 NADPH + 2 H⁺ + CO₂.
- Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is the committed step, controlled by the NADP⁺ : NADPH ratio; 6PGD = 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase.
- NADPH feeds fatty acid and steroid synthesis and keeps glutathione reduced; G6PD deficiency causes haemolytic anaemia.
- Ribose 5-phosphate goes to nucleotides; the non-oxidative phase (epimerase, transketolase, transaldolase) returns extra pentoses to glycolysis.
Drawn with 77 atoms, 4 arrows, 1 shape – every one editable in MolDraw.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Pentose phosphate pathway template free?
You can preview the Pentose phosphate pathway template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.
Can I edit the Pentose phosphate pathway template?
Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.
Is the chemistry checked?
Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.
Are the biochemical pathways drawn with structures?
Yes. Pathway templates show the intermediates as structures, with enzymes and cofactors (NAD⁺, FAD, ATP) on the arrows.
