Dilution Calculator (C1V1 = C2V2)

In short: Dilution calculator using C1V1 = C2V2: find stock volume, final concentration or final volume. It is free, works in your web browser and needs no download.

1 M stock diluted to 0.1 M in 100 mL needs 10 mL of stock and 90 mL of solvent. Change the numbers to match your dilution.

Stock volume V1: 10.0000 mL | Solvent to add: 90.0000 mL

How the C1V1 = C2V2 formula works

When you dilute a stock solution, the amount of solute stays the same, so C1 × V1 = C2 × V2. Solving for the stock volume gives V1 = C2 × V2 ÷ C1, and the solvent to add is V2 − V1.

C1 and C2 must use the same unit (for example both in M or both in mM), and the result V1 comes out in the same unit as V2. The target concentration must be lower than the stock concentration.
