AP Chemistry Score Calculator
Enter your multiple-choice and free-response results from a practice exam to estimate your AP Chemistry score from 1 to 5. The calculator uses the current exam format (60 MCQ + 7 FRQ, each worth 50%) and tells you how many more points you need for the next score.
Cutoffs are estimates. College Board does not publish fixed raw-score cutoffs. Scores are set each year so a 5 means the same thing from year to year.
AP Chemistry exam format and scoring
| Section | Questions | Time | Raw points | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| I: Multiple choice | 60 | 90 min | 60 (no penalty for wrong answers) | 50% |
| II: Free response | 7: 3 long (10 pts) + 4 short (4 pts) | 105 min | 46 | 50% |
Composite (0–100) = MCQ correct × 50/60 + FRQ points × 50/46
Estimated composite score cutoffs
| Composite (out of 100) | Estimated AP score |

| 72–100 | 5 (extremely well qualified) |
| 58–71 | 4 (well qualified) |
| 42–57 | 3 (qualified) |
| 27–41 | 2 (possibly qualified) |
| 0–26 | 1 (no recommendation) |

How to raise your AP Chemistry score
- The FRQ is worth more per point. One FRQ point adds 1.09 composite points, while one MCQ adds 0.83. Show your work, carry units and justify each claim to pick up partial credit.
- Master the calculation units: stoichiometry, gas laws, equilibrium (K, Ksp, pH) and kinetics (half-life, rate laws) come up every year.
- Practise structure questions: Lewis structures, VSEPR shapes and hybridization are quick MCQ marks. Check yourself with our Lewis structure generator and VSEPR calculator.
- Never leave an MCQ blank. There is no penalty for a wrong answer.
