GCSE / high school and AP / IB: magnesium ribbon heated in a lidded crucible on a pipe-clay triangle on a tripod; weighed before and after on a balance. 2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO.

## What the template shows

- Find the mass of oxygen that combines with magnesium, and the formula of the oxide
- Lift it a little now and then with tongs: lets oxygen in but keeps the white MgO smoke in
- Crucible + Mg ribbon
- Clean the ribbon with emery paper and coil it loosely
- Pipe-clay triangle
- Bunsen burner
- Heat strongly; do not look straight at the burning Mg
- Weigh crucible + lid, then with Mg, then after heating; reheat to constant mass. Mass gain = oxygen
- Crucible tongs
- Hot crucible: cool on a heatproof mat
- Reaction setup

Drawn with 15 shapes – every one editable in MolDraw.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the Reacting masses: burning magnesium template free?

You can preview the Reacting masses: burning magnesium template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.

### Can I edit the Reacting masses: burning magnesium template?

Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.

### Is the chemistry checked?

Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.

### Can I edit the glassware?

Yes. Every piece of glassware is a MolDraw apparatus object: move, resize, recolour the liquid or swap a piece and the joints stay connected.
