Gel tank with buffer wired to a DC power supply, and a UV transilluminator for viewing the stained gel.

## What the template shows

- Separate DNA fragments by size in an electric field
- DC power supply
- Red to red (+), black to black (−); lid on before switching on
- View the stained gel after the run; UV face shield on
- Wells at the black (−) end
- Load samples with the lid off (dense loading dye sinks them into the wells). DNA is negatively charged and runs towards the red (+) electrode
- Agarose gel under buffer
- TAE or TBE just covers it; small fragments move furthest, so run a DNA ladder
- Reaction setup
