Beckmann apparatus: freezing tube with side arm, Beckmann thermometer and stirrer in an air jacket in a stirred freezing mixture. University physical (theory at A-level / IB / CBSE 12).

## What the template shows

- Find a molar mass from how far a solute lowers the freezing point
- Bath stirrer
- Keeps the freezing mixture even
- Freezing mixture
- Ice, water and salt, 3–5 K below the freezing point of the solvent
- Beckmann thermometer
- Reads differences to 0.01 K; set so the freezing point falls on its short scale
- Stir steadily: slight supercooling, then the temperature rises and holds at the freezing point
- Side arm
- Add a weighed pellet of solute here, then find the new freezing point
- Air jacket
- Slows and evens the cooling
- Solvent, then solution
- e.g. water (Kf 1.86) or cyclohexane (Kf 20.0 K kg mol⁻¹). ΔTf = Kf·b, so M = Kf·m(solute) / (ΔTf·m(solvent, kg))
- Reaction setup

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the Freezing-point depression (Beckmann) template free?

You can preview the Freezing-point depression (Beckmann) template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.

### Can I edit the Freezing-point depression (Beckmann) template?

Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.

### Is the chemistry checked?

Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.

### Can I edit the glassware?

Yes. Every piece of glassware is a MolDraw apparatus object: move, resize, recolour the liquid or swap a piece and the joints stay connected.
