Peroxide homolysis, Br• formation, Br• addition to propene and H-atom transfer give 1-bromopropane by a chain.

## Mechanism step by step

With peroxide, Br• adds first to give the more stable radical: Br ends up on the end carbon

1. **Initiation** – The weak O–O bond breaks evenly
2. **Bromine radical** – RO• takes H from HBr
3. **Propagation 1** – Br• adds to give the 2° radical
4. **Propagation 2** – The radical takes H; Br• carries the chain

## Key points

- Fish-hook arrows move one electron each.
- Only HBr does this: for HCl and HI one propagation step is too slow.
- The secondary radical is more stable, so Br bonds to the terminal carbon.
- Termination: any two radicals combine.

Drawn with 60 atoms, 16 arrows, 6 shapes – every one editable in MolDraw.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the Anti-Markovnikov addition of HBr template free?

You can preview the Anti-Markovnikov addition of HBr template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.

### Can I edit the Anti-Markovnikov addition of HBr template?

Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.

### Is the chemistry checked?

Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.

### What is a curly-arrow mechanism template?

A ready-made drawing of a reaction mechanism in which curved arrows show where electron pairs move in each step. You can open it in MolDraw, change the substrate and reuse it.
