The acetone enolate adds to methyl vinyl ketone at the β-carbon; the enolate formed is protonated. ## Mechanism step by step Conjugate (1,4-) addition of an enolate to an enone 1. **Conjugate addition** – The enolate attacks the β-carbon 2. **Protonation** – Water protonates the new enolate ## Key points - Soft, stabilised nucleophiles add 1,4; hard ones (RLi) add 1,2. - Gives 1,5-dicarbonyl compounds. - With an aldol ring closure afterwards: the Robinson annulation. - The base is regenerated: it is catalytic.
