Propene and HBr: the π bond takes H⁺ to form the secondary cation, which bromide captures to give 2-bromopropane.

## Mechanism step by step

Markovnikov’s rule: H goes to the carbon that already has more H, through the more stable cation

1. **Protonation** – The π bond attacks H: secondary cation
2. **Bromide capture** – Br⁻ adds to the cation

## Key points

- Markovnikov: the more substituted (more stable) carbocation forms.
- Rearrangements can follow if a hydride or methyl shift gives a better cation.
- With peroxides HBr adds the other way round, by a radical chain.
- HCl and HI add the same way; HI fastest.

Drawn with 25 atoms, 6 arrows, 4 shapes – every one editable in MolDraw.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the Addition of HBr to an alkene template free?

You can preview the Addition of HBr to an alkene template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.

### Can I edit the Addition of HBr to an alkene template?

Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.

### Is the chemistry checked?

Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.

### What is a curly-arrow mechanism template?

A ready-made drawing of a reaction mechanism in which curved arrows show where electron pairs move in each step. You can open it in MolDraw, change the substrate and reuse it.
