New C–C bond marked. ## Mechanism step by step An organomagnesium reagent adds to C=O; acid work-up gives the alcohol 1. **Nucleophilic addition** – The C–Mg bond attacks the C=O carbon 2. **Acid work-up** – The alkoxide is protonated ## Key points - Dry ether or THF: water destroys R–MgBr (it is a strong base). - Aldehydes give 2° alcohols, ketones 3°, formaldehyde 1°. - Esters add two equivalents to give 3° alcohols; CO₂ gives carboxylic acids. - Add the work-up acid only after the addition is complete.
