Periodic trends sheet: mini periodic tables with trend arrows and shading for covalent radius, first ionisation energy and Pauling electronegativity, with real values across period 2 and down groups 1 and 17.

## What the template shows

- Atomic radius, first ionisation energy and electronegativity across period 2 and down a group
- Atomic (covalent) radius
- Shrinks across a period (more protons, same shell); grows down a group (new shell each period)
- increases in the arrow directions
- Across period 2 (pm) →
- Down Group 1 (pm) →
- First ionisation energy
- Rises across a period with dips at B (2p electron) and O (first paired 2p electron); falls down a group
- Across period 2 (kJ mol⁻¹) →
- Down Group 1 (kJ mol⁻¹) →
- Electronegativity (Pauling)
- Rises across a period and up a group: fluorine is the most electronegative element (3.98)
- Across period 2 →
- Down Group 17 →
- Across a period the nuclear charge rises while electrons enter the same shell: the effective nuclear charge grows, so atoms shrink and hold their electrons more tightly.
- Down a group each period adds a shell: the outer electrons are further out and better shielded, so radius grows and ionisation energy and electronegativity fall.
- Shading in the small tables shows the general direction only; the boxes give real values. Noble gases have no Pauling electronegativity.
- Data: covalent radii (Cordero et al. 2008), ionisation energies (NIST), Pauling electronegativities (CRC Handbook).

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the Periodic trends template free?

You can preview the Periodic trends template here and open and edit it in MolDraw for free. Downloading or exporting it is part of MolDraw Pro, together with the other premium templates.

### Can I edit the Periodic trends template?

Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.

### Is the chemistry checked?

Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.

### Which MO diagrams are included?

H₂ and He₂, N₂ and O₂ (showing s–p mixing and paramagnetic O₂), and carbon monoxide.
