2-Chlorocyclohexanone forms an enolate on the other α-carbon, closes to a cyclopropanone, and methoxide opens it to methyl cyclopentanecarboxylate.

## Mechanism step by step

An α-halo ketone in base contracts through a cyclopropanone

1. **Enolate** – The α′-H (away from Cl) is removed
2. **Cyclopropanone** – Intramolecular SN2 displaces chloride
3. **Methoxide adds** – Attack on the strained C=O
4. **Ring opening** – The three-membered ring breaks: a carbanion
5. **Protonation** – Methanol gives the ester

## Key points

- Cyclic α-halo ketones contract by one carbon.
- Hydroxide gives the acid, alkoxides the ester, amines the amide.
- The cyclopropanone opens to give the more stable carbanion.
- Without an α′-H, a semibenzilic (quasi-Favorskii) route operates.
