Diethyl adipate cyclises with ethoxide to ethyl 2-oxocyclopentanecarboxylate; deprotonation of the product drives the equilibrium.

## Mechanism step by step

An intramolecular Claisen condensation: a diester closes to a cyclic β-keto ester

1. **Enolate** – Ethoxide removes an α-H
2. **Ring closure** – Attack on the other ester: a five-membered ring
3. **Elimination** – Ethoxide is expelled
4. **Deprotonation** – The doubly activated C–H (pKa 11) drives the reaction
5. **Work-up** – Acid gives the neutral β-keto ester

## Key points

- Best for five- and six-membered rings (1,6- and 1,7-diesters).
- A full equivalent of base is needed: the product is deprotonated.
- Hydrolysis and decarboxylation then give the cyclic ketone (cyclopentanone).
- The alkoxide matches the ester to avoid transesterification.

Drawn with 173 atoms, 16 arrows, 7 shapes – every one editable in MolDraw.
