Hydrogenation cycle of Wilkinson's catalyst: oxidative addition of H₂ to RhCl(PPh₃)₂, alkene coordination and migratory insertion into Rh–H, and C–H reductive elimination of the alkane; key step: 1,2-insertion of the alkene into the Rh–H bond.

## What the template shows

- RhCl(PPh₃)₃ adds H₂ across a C=C bond through a Rh(I)/Rh(III) cycle
- Overall: R–CH=CH₂ + H₂ → R–CH₂–CH₃ (cat. RhCl(PPh₃)₃, 25 °C, 1 atm H₂)
- RhH₂ClL₂
- RhH(CH₂CH₂R)ClL₂
- Rh(III), alkyl hydride
- RhCl(PPh₃)₃ − PPh₃
- The precatalyst RhCl(PPh₃)₃ (16 e⁻) loses one PPh₃ to give the active 14-electron RhCl(PPh₃)₂.
- Both H atoms add to the same face of the alkene (syn addition), as the cis dihydride delivers them.
- Less hindered alkenes react faster, so terminal and cis alkenes are reduced selectively; C=O, NO₂ and CO₂R survive.
- Rh(I) → Rh(III) on adding H₂; reductive elimination of the alkane returns Rh(I).
- Key step: migratory insertion into Rh–H
- The Rh–H bond electrons go with H to one alkene carbon while the π electrons form the Rh–C bond: a four-centre, syn addition of Rh and H that puts Rh on the terminal carbon.
- L = PPh₃; ligands are named in the captions, not drawn · every part of this figure is editable
