Catalytic cycle of the Heck reaction with methyl acrylate: oxidative addition of Ar–X, syn migratory insertion of the alkene, syn β-hydride elimination giving the (E)-cinnamate, and base-assisted loss of HX from H–Pd–X; key step: migratory insertion with curly arrows.

## What the template shows

- An aryl halide and an alkene give a substituted alkene; a base turns H–Pd–X back into Pd(0)
- Overall: Ar–X + CH₂=CH–CO₂Me → (E)-Ar–CH=CH–CO₂Me (cat. Pd(0)L₂, Et₃N)
- L₂XPd–alkyl
- no organometallic reagent
- No organometallic partner: the alkene C–H is replaced, so only a base (Et₃N, K₂CO₃, NaOAc) is consumed.
- Insertion is syn and regioselective: the aryl group goes to the less substituted alkene carbon.
- β-Hydride elimination is also syn and gives mainly the E (trans) alkene.
- The base removes HX from H–Pd(II)–X, closing the cycle (Nobel Prize 2010 with Negishi and Suzuki).
- Key step: syn migratory insertion (carbopalladation)
- The Pd–Ar bond electrons carry the aryl group to the CH₂ end of the alkene while the C=C π electrons form the new Pd–C bond: a four-centre syn addition that puts Pd on the carbon bearing CO₂Me, ready for β-hydride elimination.
- methyl acrylate
- L = phosphine (e.g. PPh₃); ligands are named in the captions, not drawn · every part of this figure is editable

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the Mizoroki–Heck reaction template free?

Yes. The Mizoroki–Heck reaction template is one of the free MolDraw templates: open it in the editor or download it from this page as SVG or PNG and use it in your slides, worksheets and notes.

### Can I edit the Mizoroki–Heck reaction template?

Yes. It opens as an ordinary MolDraw drawing, so every structure, arrow, label and colour can be changed, and you can add your own content around it.

### Is the chemistry checked?

Every structure is checked with RDKit and every curly arrow passes MolDraw’s electron-flow audit. The sources used are listed on this page.

### What does a catalytic cycle template show?

The active catalyst, each intermediate around the cycle, the substrates that enter and the products that leave, with each elementary step named on its arrow.
