## Mechanism step by step

Bromonium ion formation, then anti attack by bromide

1. **Bromonium ion** – The π bond attacks Br; Br closes the three-membered ring
2. **Ring opening** – Br⁻ attacks from the back

## Key points

- Anti addition: the two Br atoms end up on opposite faces.
- In water the bromonium is opened by H₂O: a bromohydrin.
- The decolourisation of bromine water is a test for C=C.
- Unsymmetrical bromonium ions open at the more substituted carbon.
